Introduction to ArcGIS 9 and the Use of GIS

December 4-6, 2005

UW Pack Forest, Eatonville, WA

About the Workshop

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) are specialized computer systems made for the storage, analysis and display of spatially referenced information. GIS is rapidly becoming a fundamental component of modern, knowledge- and information-based forest management. ArcGIS® is one of the world’s most widely used GIS software packages. Developed by ESRI, it employs an easy to use point-and-click interface running on a variety of different computers (PC, Mac, UNIX). For more information about ESRI software, visit their web site at www.esri.com.

Authorized instructor of ESRI technology trademark Luke Rogers, GIS Specialist for the Rural Technology Initiative and instructor for this course, is an ESRI-authorized ArcGIS 9 instructor with nearly a decade of GIS experience in education, research, and industry. This course covers fundamental GIS concepts as well as how to query a GIS database, manipulate tabular data, edit spatial and attribute data, and present data clearly and efficiently using maps and charts. Participants learn how to use ArcMap™, ArcCatalog™, and ArcToolbox™ and explore how these applications work together to provide a complete GIS software solution. Students should have experience in the use of computers and Microsoft Windows® software including spreadsheet applications. Students should be able to use Windows Explorer for simple functions such as copying, renaming, and deleting files and directories. Upon completion of the course, students will receive the ESRI “Introduction to ArcGIS 9” Certificate of Course Completion and are eligible to receive 18 Category 1 Society of American Foresters CFE credits.
