Connecting to RTI ArcSDE Services

ESRI's Spatial Database Engine (SDE) 9.1 can be accessed through a variety of software including ArcView 3.3, the ArcGIS 9 Suite, ArcInfo Workstation, ArcIMS, and ArcExplorer. The methods for connecting to SDE varies slightly from one piece of software to the next. The following document will show you how to connect to ArcSDE with ArcCatalog 9.0. Please note that in order to use ArcSDE 9.1 you must have an 9.x compatible technology. For instance, ArcGIS 8.3 will NOT work with ArcSDE 9.1.

If you would rather download the connection files you can do that here.

1) Open ArcCatalog

2) Open the Database Connections Folder and click "Add Spatial Database Connection"

3) Enter the following information:

  • Server: sde.gis.washington.edu
  • Service: 5151 (this is the port number or instance)
  • Database: uw (or landsat for the LANDSAT data)
  • User Name: uw
  • Password: huskies
  • Check the Save Name/Password box (otherwise you must enter each time you connect)
  • Check the Save Version box (otherwise you have to tell it each time you connect)

4) Click Test Connection. If the Test Connection button greys out then you have made a successful connection to ArcSDE!

5) Click "OK" on the Spatial Database Connection box and you will notice a new connection listed in the Database Connections folder called Connection to sde.gis.washington.edu

6) You can rename the connection to anything you like. If you expand the connection you will see all the available datasets.

7) You can expand Feature Datasets as they are containers for similar data or data that has a logical connection to one another. You can preview the datasets using the Preview Tab and you can add the data to ArcMap by simply dragging the dataset to the ArcMap Legend. The UW user has access to various datasets on SDE and as I have more time I will add additional data and build better metadata.

Optionally you can download the connection files directly

1) Download the connection file for the UW Database or the LANDSAT Database

2) Save the downloaded file to \Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\ESRI\ArcCatalog

3) Restart ArcCatalog and connect by clicking on uw@uw.sde or uw@landsat.sde
